ECOGEN (Centre of Excellence on Innovative and Integrated Ecosystem for Green Hydrogen) will be established at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur under the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy, 2024, with the aim of promoting green hydrogen technology and research. The center will work on advanced technologies such as green hydrogen production, storage, utilization, system integration, and fuel cells, while strengthening collaboration among industry, academia, and policymakers. Aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, this initiative will foster clean energy, energy self-reliance, industrial investment, and the reduction of carbon emissions. It is considered a significant step towards making India a global green hydrogen hub and achieving net-zero emissions and sustainable development goals.

A Centre of Excellence for Green Hydrogen—ECOGEN (Centre of Excellence on Innovative and Integrated Ecosystem for Green Hydrogen)—will be established at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. This project has been approved under the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy, 2024. Its objective is to develop advanced technologies related to the production, storage, utilization, and system integration of green hydrogen and to propel India towards a clean energy economy.

Significance of Green Hydrogen and ECOGEN

Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced through the electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy, resulting in negligible carbon emissions. ECOGEN aims to bridge the gap between research/innovation and industrial applications, develop cost-effective hydrogen technologies, and strengthen the green hydrogen ecosystem in India. The center will also foster collaboration among academic institutions, industries, and policymakers.

ECOGEN will be an interdisciplinary research center focusing on all major stages of the green hydrogen value chain. Its core research areas include hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, the utilization of hydrogen in industrial and energy sectors, and system integration. Additionally, research into technologies related to safe transport, fuel cells, and energy efficiency will be promoted.

Alignment with National and State-Level Policies

This initiative aligns with the objectives of the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy, 2024, and the Government of India's National Green Hydrogen Mission. It aims to foster clean energy production, industrial investment, research and development (R&D), skill development, technology commercialization, and energy self-reliance. This initiative represents a significant step towards reducing dependence on fossil fuels and establishing India as a global green hydrogen hub.
