Driverless (GoA-4) Train Operations on Kolkata Metro: A New Direction for India's Smart Urban Transport
Kolkata Metro has received safety clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) for GoA-4 (Grade of Automation-4) based driverless metro operations on the Green Line. Once passenger services commence, Kolkata will join the select group of Indian cities—alongside Delhi and Bengaluru—to offer fully automated metro services. What is a Driverless Metro (GoA-4)?
Driverless metro systems are based on Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, classified as Grade of Automation-4 (GoA-4). This represents the highest level of metro operation, where the train runs automatically without a driver. All processes—such as train operation, speed control, stopping at stations, opening and closing doors, and departing—are automated, while the entire network is monitored by a central Operation Control Centre.
Key Features of Kolkata Metro
The first phase of the driverless service will be implemented on the Green Line (Howrah Maidan–Salt Lake Sector V), which spans approximately 16.6 km and comprises 12 stations. This corridor is also renowned for featuring India's first underwater metro tunnel beneath the Hooghly River. Driverless operations will also be introduced on the Purple Line in the future, further expanding the Kolkata Metro's modern automated network.
