India-Maldives Digital Payment Cooperation: Launch of Favara-UPI Cross-Border Payment Corridor
On July 30, 2026, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) launched the Favara-UPI cross-border payment corridor, enabling Maldivian citizens to transfer funds in real-time to UPI accounts in India via their mobile banking apps. This system represents a technical integration between the Maldives' 'Favara' and India's UPI payment systems, allowing payments made in MVR to be received as INR by the beneficiary. The MMA, RBI, NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), and banks from both nations played pivotal roles in this project. This initiative marks a significant step towards strengthening digital payments, financial cooperation, and fintech integration between India and the Maldives.
On July 30, 2026, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) launched the Favara-UPI cross-border payment corridor. Through this arrangement, Maldivian citizens can use their mobile banking apps to send funds in real-time to UPI-enabled bank accounts in India. This initiative is a significant step towards strengthening digital financial cooperation and cross-border payment systems between India and the Maldives.
What is the Favara-UPI Payment Corridor?
It is a technical integration between the Maldives' instant payment system, 'Favara', and India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Through this system, users in the Maldives can transfer funds directly from their bank accounts to India. Transactions originate in Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), and the recipient receives the amount in Indian Rupees (INR) within seconds.
Key Features and Benefits
This payment system facilitates real-time cross-border fund transfers, automated currency conversion, and secure transactions via mobile banking. In the initial phase, this service has been made available to customers of the Bank of Maldives PLC and the Maldives Islamic Bank PLC. This will make remittances faster, simpler, and more cost-effective compared to traditional banking channels.
Institutional Collaboration and Implementation
The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), and commercial banks from both countries played a pivotal role in the success of this project. An agreement was signed between NIPL and MMA in July 2025; subsequently, following the completion of testing, certification, and bank integration processes, the service was launched in July 2026.
Significance for the UPSC Examination
This initiative serves as a significant example of India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), FinTech diplomacy, and 'Neighbourhood First' policy. Questions related to UPI, NPCI, NIPL, the RBI, cross-border payment systems, and India-Maldives relations may be asked in the UPSC Preliminary Examination. For the Main Examination, analyzing this development in the context of the digital economy, financial inclusion, regional cooperation, and digital diplomacy is crucial.
