India's First UPI-Based Flexi-Benefits Wallet Launched: A New Initiative in Employee Benefit Management and Digital Payments

Published 31 July 2026

OmniCard has launched India's first UPI-based flexi-benefits wallet, enabling employees to utilize tax-efficient benefits and make UPI payments through a single digital wallet. Built on an RBI-licensed PPI platform, the wallet can be used at approximately 60 million (6 crore) UPI-accepting merchant outlets across the country. Under Income Tax Rule 2026, the tax-free meal benefit limit has been raised from ₹50 to ₹200 per meal, potentially allowing eligible employees to avail annual tax-free benefits exceeding ₹2 lakh. This initiative marks a significant step towards promoting Digital India, a cashless economy, fintech innovation, and transparent employee benefit management.

OmniCard, a corporate expense management platform developed by Eroute Technologies Pvt. Ltd., has launched India's first UPI-based flexi-benefits wallet, branded as the 'Flexi-Benefits Basket.' This digital wallet allows employees to manage various tax-efficient benefits in an integrated manner and make direct payments via UPI.

Key Features of the Platform

The wallet operates on a Prepaid Payment Instrument (PPI) platform licensed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Employees can make payments using the UPI 'Scan-and-Pay' feature directly from this digital wallet. This facility is accepted by approximately 60 million UPI-enabled merchants across India, thereby eliminating the need for physical benefit cards.

Employee Benefits and Tax Efficiency

Through this platform, employees can avail benefits covering meals, fuel, telecommunications, books and periodicals, gadgets, and other approved categories. In accordance with Income Tax Rule 2026, the limit for tax-free meal benefits has been increased from ₹50 per meal to ₹200 per meal. Subject to specified conditions, employees can avail annual tax-free benefits exceeding ₹2 lakh within their CTC structure.

Regulatory and Technical Significance

This system utilizes Merchant Category Code (MCC)-based controls, ensuring that benefits can be spent only at eligible merchants. This ensures tax compliance, transparency, and effective management of employee benefits for employers. It also strengthens India's regulated digital payment ecosystem.

Significance in the Context of India's Digital Payment Landscape

India has emerged as one of the world's largest digital payment markets, with UPI revolutionizing the payment system. Initiatives like 'flexi-benefit wallets' foster Digital India, a cashless economy, fintech innovation, and the expansion of formal financial services. This introduces a new model for the digital distribution of benefits within the corporate sector.

Significance for the UPSC Examination

This news is important for studying current affairs related to fintech innovation, UPI, RBI, PPI, tax administration, digital payment infrastructure, and Income Tax rules. The examination may feature factual and analytical questions regarding UPI, PPI, Merchant Category Code (MCC), digital payment systems, employee benefit management, and India's fintech ecosystem.
